There’s something about a summer evening in an open field that just works for engagement photos. Caroline and Ben’s session was simple in the best way: tall grass, warm summer light, plenty of room to move around, and nothing competing for attention in the background.
We went for a countryside-inspired feel for their engagement photos, using the open field and surrounding greenery as the backdrop. There wasn’t an elaborate setup or a dozen different locations involved. Instead, we had space to walk around, explore, and create photographs that felt romantic and a little nostalgic while still looking like Caroline and Ben.
Countryside Engagement Photos in North Carolina
You really don’t need a complicated location to create a full engagement gallery. Sometimes an open field is one of my favorite places to photograph because the simplicity gives us room to focus on the couple rather than constantly searching for the next backdrop.
For Caroline and Ben, the tall grass and summer greenery gave the entire session that relaxed, countryside feeling without needing much else. As the light changed throughout the evening, the same field could look completely different depending on where we were standing and how I photographed it.
Locations like this are also perfect if you’re drawn to engagement photos that feel a little softer and more romantic. There’s movement everywhere — grass blowing around, clothes catching the wind, the two of you actually being able to walk instead of staying planted in one spot — which naturally creates photographs that feel less posed.
Keeping Engagement Photos Simple
I think there can be a lot of unnecessary pressure to make an engagement session into a full production. Two locations, multiple outfit changes, props, activities, and a detailed Pinterest board can absolutely be fun if that's what you want, but none of those things are required to make interesting photographs.
Caroline and Ben's session is a perfect example. A beautiful summer evening and a field gave us everything we needed.
When the environment is simple, I can pay more attention to the things I actually care about: the light, composition, movement, and how the two of you interact with each other. I'll still give direction and intentionally create some of the more editorial photographs, but there’s also plenty of space for the session to loosen up as we go.
That combination is what keeps a gallery from feeling like an hour of different poses in the same field.
Romantic Summer Engagement Photos Without Feeling Overly Posed
One of my biggest goals during an engagement session is getting you past the feeling that you’re supposed to be performing for the camera. You probably don't spend a lot of your normal life standing in a field wondering what to do with your hands, so I'm not going to expect you to magically know what to do when I point a camera at you.
I'll give you direction when you need it, especially when I'm thinking about the light or composition, but I also want to give you room to interact naturally. We might walk through the field, move around, or stay in one spot because the light happens to be particularly good there.
That's where my documentary-meets-editorial approach comes into engagement sessions. Some photographs are more intentionally composed, while others happen in the seconds between them. Usually, you need both to make the gallery actually feel like you.
Why Summer Is Perfect for Field Engagement Photos
Summer in North Carolina obviously comes with one small caveat: it's hot. But if we're willing to work around that, it's also one of my favorite times of year for a countryside engagement session.
Everything is green, fields are full, and later evening sessions give us that softer summer light without spending the entire shoot directly underneath the midday sun. As the sun gets lower, we can also play with backlighting and the way the light comes through the grass, which adds even more warmth and texture to the photographs.
You don't necessarily need a recognizable Raleigh landmark or elaborate venue for your engagement photos to feel special. Sometimes the best location is somewhere quiet where we can make the landscape feel like it belongs entirely to the two of you for an evening.
Choosing an Engagement Session That Feels Like You
Your engagement session doesn't need to look like anyone else's. If getting dressed up and running around downtown Raleigh sounds incredible, we can do that. If you'd rather grab drinks at your favorite bar, let's go. And if your ideal evening is somewhere quiet, surrounded by tall grass and summer greenery, that can be more than enough.
Caroline and Ben's countryside engagement session was a reminder of how much you can create when you keep the setting simple and let the people in the photographs be the interesting part.
At the end of the day, that's what I want your engagement photos to preserve anyway. Not just where you went or what you wore, but what the two of you felt like together during this particular little season of your life.
