Some surprise proposals are meticulously planned down to the second. And some require a little improvising.
Mia and Evan's surprise proposal at Reynolda Gardens in Winston-Salem was the latter—in the absolute best way. With a group of friends waiting to celebrate, a beautiful garden setting, and a few moments where we had to think very quickly to keep Mia from realizing what was happening, this proposal was one of those sessions where the story unfolded completely in the moment.
And somehow, we kept the surprise alive.
A Surprise Proposal Planned With Their Friends
Evan's proposal wasn't just a surprise waiting for Mia in the gardens. Their friends were in on it too, helping plan everything and gathering at Reynolda Gardens to be there for the moment. Which was incredibly sweet. It also created one very important problem: Mia absolutely could not see them before Evan proposed.
As they made their way through the gardens, there were a few moments where keeping the surprise intact required some quick thinking, strategic positioning, and—in my case—a little unexpected acting and improv.
When you're photographing a surprise proposal, you can create a plan beforehand, but real life is still happening around you. People walk in unexpected directions. Timing shifts. Someone looks somewhere they're definitely not supposed to look yet.
Sometimes my job is taking beautiful photographs. Sometimes my job is apparently also convincing you to walk in literally any other direction.
The Moment Evan Proposed
After all of the planning, improvising, and trying very hard not to accidentally expose the group of friends waiting nearby, everything finally came together.
Evan proposed to Mia surrounded by the gardens, and I was able to photograph the moment as it actually happened—the surprise, the realization, and all of those reactions you simply can't recreate afterward.
That's why I love photographing proposals in a documentary way.
The actual proposal might only last a few moments, but there's so much happening within them. The nervous energy beforehand. The second someone realizes what's happening. The reactions immediately afterward. The people you love waiting nearby to celebrate with you. Those are the photographs that tell the whole story.
Celebrating With Their Favorite People
One of the sweetest parts of Mia and Evan's proposal was having their friends there to celebrate alongside them.
Once there was officially no surprise left to ruin, everyone could finally come together.
Including the group we'd been working so hard to hide.
Having friends involved in your proposal adds another layer to the story because you're not only documenting the two of you getting engaged. You're preserving the reactions and excitement of some of the people who love you most.
And after spending the first part of the evening trying to make sure Mia didn't see any of them, finally having everyone together felt even sweeter.
Just-Engaged Photos Around Reynolda Gardens
After the proposal and celebrations, Mia and Evan and I spent some time walking around Reynolda Gardens for their first photographs as an engaged couple. This is one of my favorite ways to photograph a surprise proposal because the experience doesn't have to end immediately after someone says yes. Once the nerves are gone and the secret is officially out, we can slow everything down.
We wandered through the gardens, explored different pockets of greenery, and created a mix of romantic portraits and natural, in-between moments while they got to soak in the fact that they had literally just gotten engaged. There's something different about photographs taken immediately after a proposal. You're not trying to recreate excitement for the camera. It's already there.
Why Reynolda Gardens Is Beautiful for a Winston-Salem Proposal
Reynolda Gardens is such a romantic setting for a surprise proposal because you have so much natural variety within one location.
The garden setting gives everything a timeless, intimate feeling while also giving us room to walk around and create a full couples session afterward. Instead of having one beautiful backdrop for the proposal and immediately being finished, we can let the location become part of the entire experience.
For couples who want something romantic, natural, and garden-inspired for their proposal photographs, it's an especially beautiful option in Winston-Salem.
And if you're planning to have friends or family waiting nearby to celebrate afterward, we can work that into the game plan too. Even if it requires some improvisation.
Planning a Surprise Proposal at Reynolda Gardens
The biggest thing I want people planning a surprise proposal to know is this: You don't need to have every detail figured out before reaching out to your photographer. Part of my job is helping you think through the logistics.
We'll talk about where you want to propose, where I'll be positioned, how we'll recognize each other, what happens afterward, and how we're going to keep your partner from figuring everything out. And when something inevitably doesn't happen exactly the way we pictured it? We adapt.
Mia and Evan's proposal was the perfect example. Their friends helped create an incredible surprise, we had to make a few decisions on the fly to protect it, and in the end, Mia got to walk into a moment surrounded by people who had been waiting to celebrate her and Evan. That's the part that matters.
