If your ideal wedding feels a little more like a garden party than a traditional wedding, the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill might need to be on your radar.
This celebration was colorful, intimate, a little whimsical, and completely full of personality—from spending the day surrounded by the gardens to a reception that eventually turned into a live show when the groom's own band performed.
I photographed this wedding as a second photographer alongside Durham-based wedding photographer Madeline Glenn Jones, which gave me the chance to document so many of the smaller moments happening around the edges of the day. And at a wedding like this, there was a LOT to notice.
A Wedding at the North Carolina Botanical Garden
Located in Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Botanical Garden is such a fun alternative to a traditional North Carolina wedding venue.
Rather than bringing in a ton of décor to completely transform a space, the gardens already give you color, texture, winding paths, native plants, and plenty of greenery. The Garden is designed around connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, with porches, breezeways, natural light, and gardens surrounding the event spaces.
For this wedding, all of that made the celebration feel less like a formal event happening at a venue and more like a really beautiful garden party. It was relaxed and full of personality—which also meant there were constantly things happening naturally for us to photograph.
Whimsical Garden Party Wedding Inspiration
What I loved most about this wedding was that the garden-party feeling didn't come from trying to force a specific theme. The setting did a lot of the work.
When you're already surrounded by flowers, greenery, natural textures, and all of the slightly wild beauty of a botanical garden, you don't necessarily need to cover every available surface in wedding décor. Instead, the details can add to what's already there.
That's something I love about weddings that feel a little less traditional. The goal doesn't have to be making everything look perfectly matched or recreating something you've already seen on Pinterest.
Sometimes the coolest weddings happen when couples choose a setting they genuinely love and build from there.
Documentary Wedding Photography in Chapel Hill
Weddings like this are also basically a playground for the way I love to photograph. When I say my approach is documentary, I'm talking about the photographs happening outside of the obvious wedding moments, too.
Of course the ceremony matters. Of course we're photographing the couple and their people. But I'm also watching what's happening three tables away.
Someone laughing with their drink in their hand. A guest wandering through the garden. Friends talking during cocktail hour. Someone fixing another person's outfit. The reaction happening behind the person giving a speech. Those little moments are what make a wedding gallery feel alive.
And because I was second photographing this wedding for Madeline, I had even more freedom to look around and find those secondary stories while she focused on everything happening at the center of the day.
When the Groom's Band Plays Your Wedding Reception
And then there was the band. Instead of the entertainment feeling like something that had simply been booked for the wedding, the groom actually got up and performed with his own band. Which is objectively cooler!!!
It completely changed the energy of the reception. Suddenly it didn't feel like everyone was attending another wedding tradition—it felt like we'd stumbled into a tiny concert in the middle of a garden party.
Those are the kinds of choices that make a wedding feel personal. You don't need to invent fifteen never-before-seen wedding ideas to make your celebration unique. Sometimes it's simply asking, “What would actually be fun for us?”
Maybe that's your own band performing. Maybe it's getting married surrounded by native plants instead of inside a ballroom. Maybe it's skipping a tradition you don't care about entirely.
The weddings I remember most aren't necessarily the ones with the most elaborate details. They're the ones where you can tell exactly who the couple is by experiencing the day.

The Garden hosts small wedding ceremonies and other social events, with indoor and outdoor spaces surrounded by its native plant gardens and natural landscape. But from a photography perspective, what I especially love is the variety.
Instead of having one designated "photo spot," the environment itself gives us places to explore. Greenery, architecture, pathways, flowers, open spaces, and little pockets of light can all become part of the photographs without needing to leave the property.
It's especially fitting for couples dreaming about a wedding that feels:

If there's one thing I'd steal from this wedding, it wouldn't necessarily be a color palette or a particular floral arrangement. It would be the willingness to make the day personal.
Your wedding doesn't have to look like every other wedding at your venue. And it definitely doesn't need to include traditions simply because they're what you're "supposed" to do.
Choose the things that make you excited. Bring in the weird idea. Play the music you actually listen to. Let the garden be a garden. Have your freaking band perform at the reception!!
