There are some wedding venues that immediately feel like Raleigh, and The Merrimon-Wynne House is one of them. Located just outside downtown Raleigh, this historic white house combines classic Southern architecture, beautiful outdoor spaces, and a clean backdrop that can work with so many different wedding styles.
For this edition of my Venue Spotlight series, we’re looking at what makes Merrimon-Wynne such a recognizable Raleigh wedding venue—and, more importantly, how I’d approach photographing and styling a wedding here.
A Historic Wedding Venue in Downtown Raleigh
Merrimon-Wynne has the kind of character that you simply can't recreate in a brand-new venue. The historic house, wraparound porches, mature greenery, and bright exterior already give the property a strong visual identity before you add a single floral arrangement. At the same time, it doesn't lock you into one particular wedding aesthetic. That's one of the things I love most about it.
A Merrimon-Wynne House wedding could be timeless and black-tie, colorful and garden-inspired, romantic and understated, or something much more editorial. The venue gives you a beautiful foundation without requiring your wedding to look exactly like every other wedding held there. And from a photography perspective, that versatility matters.
Why I Love Merrimon-Wynne for Wedding Photos
I never want wedding portraits to feel like we disappeared for an hour to conduct a completely separate photoshoot. At a venue like Merrimon-Wynne, we don't have to.
The house itself gives us architectural lines and a more polished backdrop, while the porches and outdoor spaces can create something softer and more romantic. Instead of choosing one "photo spot," I'd rather move through the property in small pockets throughout the day.
We can spend a few minutes creating more intentional, editorial portraits and then send you right back to your people. Later, when the light changes, we can step outside again for ten minutes and create something completely different.
That approach gives your gallery variety without sacrificing the actual experience of your wedding day.
How I'd Photograph a Merrimon-Wynne House Wedding
My approach to wedding photography is a blend of documentary storytelling and an editorial eye, and Merrimon-Wynne lends itself beautifully to both. The architecture gives us opportunities for photographs that feel composed and intentional, but some of the images I'd be most excited about are the ones happening around those portraits.
Your wedding party wandering through the house. Your mom fixing the back of your dress. Guests arriving and hugging on the lawn. Someone sneaking away from cocktail hour with two drinks. Your grandparents talking at their table. Your best friends losing their minds on the dance floor. Those aren't necessarily the photographs we can plan months in advance. They're the ones that make the gallery yours.
For portraits, I'd keep things simple. Movement, interesting composition, good light, and enough direction that you never have to wonder what to do with your hands—but not so much posing that you stop looking like yourselves.
How I'd Style a Wedding at Merrimon-Wynne
Because the venue itself is so classic, I'd personally have a little fun creating contrast.
Rather than trying to make every detail feel traditionally Southern, I'd mix the historic setting with elements that feel slightly more unexpected and collected.
Think soft butter yellow, garden green, cream, dusty blue, and touches of chocolate brown. Organic florals that feel like they could have been gathered from an overgrown garden. Patterned linens mixed with classic neutrals. Handwritten menus. Vintage-inspired glassware. Fruit tucked between flowers and taper candles. Custom matchbooks waiting at the bar.
For cocktail hour, I'd lean into the feeling of an actual garden party: champagne, a really good signature cocktail, live music, and enough time built into the schedule for the couple to actually experience it.
The goal wouldn't be to transform Merrimon-Wynne into a completely different venue.
I'd use everything that's already beautiful about the property and make the details surrounding it feel unmistakably personal.
Planning a Merrimon-Wynne House Wedding
If Merrimon-Wynne is on your Raleigh wedding venue list, my biggest advice is simple: don't plan your wedding around what you think you're supposed to do at the venue. Let the historic house be the backdrop, then make everything else feel like you.
Choose colors because you love them. Bring in weird little details that make your friends immediately think of you. Skip traditions you don't care about. Build enough breathing room into your timeline that you can actually have a cocktail during cocktail hour. And when it's finally your wedding day, be there for it.
The photographs don't need you to perform for them. The best ones usually happen when you forget about the camera entirely.
