Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming, and many couples aren’t sure where to start. Between timelines, details, and all the little decisions along the way, the last thing you want to worry about is feeling awkward in photos or wondering if you’re forgetting something important.
Your photographer is one of the vendors who will be with you for most of the day — always nearby, documenting the big moments and the quiet in-between ones. When couples book with Maggie Whitesell Photography, my goal isn’t just to show up with a camera. My job is to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and fully present so you can truly enjoy your wedding day.
the mwp wedding day guide
One of the first things I share with my couples is the MWP Wedding Day Guide. Over time, it has become one of the most helpful resources I provide — filled with tips, planning advice, and little details many couples don’t even realize matter until the day arrives.
Closer to your wedding, we’ll also have a timeline planning call to walk through everything together. But if you’ve never planned a wedding before, that conversation can feel overwhelming without a little context.
Things like:
- deciding whether to do a first look
- planning portraits around sunset
- figuring out how long family photos actually take
- can all impact the flow of the day.

My wedding flat lay checklist
One of my favorite sections in the guide is the wedding flat lay checklist. This page walks couples through the details they may want to gather for their detail photos, for example: invitations, rings, heirlooms, jewelry, perfume, and other meaningful items. Having it organized as a checklist makes it much easier to remember everything ahead of time.
Before the wedding day, I resend the flat lay checklist so couples can gather their details in advance. This helps the morning start smoothly and keeps anyone from scrambling at the last minute. Every detail is intentional, and those little pieces deserve to feel just as meaningful in your photos.
reception tips that make a big difference
Small planning decisions can also make a huge difference in how your photos look and feel – especially during the reception. Something as simple as leaving a little extra space between the dance floor and the guest tables can make a big impact visually. I also recommend minimizing harsh DJ lighting so the dance floor feels more like a joyful celebration and less like a nightclub.
Other tips I share include things like planning a private last dance or building in a buffer before sunset so we have time for those dreamy golden-hour portraits.
why i check in with my couples during wedding planning
Sometimes the best way to ease wedding stress is simply talking things through. I love meeting with my couples on FaceTime or grabbing coffee to chat about anything and everything. I’m always happy to talk through ideas, questions, or timelines. And honestly, weddings are one of my favorite things to talk about!
timeline planning makes your day feel more relaxed
Timeline guidance is one of the biggest ways I support my couples. Together we can plan when getting-ready photos should begin, how long portraits will take, and how to build in breathing room throughout the day. Thoughtful timelines allow the day to feel calm and natural instead of rushed.
the goal: Be fully present
Preparing ahead of time allows you to fully enjoy your wedding day and focus on what matters most: each other. When you trust the process and the team supporting you, there’s no need to worry about the photos… I’ve got you!
When you feel relaxed and prepared, the photos truly become effortless.
