There is something about getting ready for a wedding in a space with history already built into the walls.

For this editorial at The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts, Gabrielle and Mary spent the beginning of the day tucked inside the estate, surrounded by patterned wallpaper, antique details, dramatic window light, and rooms that feel as though they belong to another era.

Rather than treating getting ready as simply the part of the day before the “real” photos begin, we leaned into it as its own story.

A Quiet, Intimate Start to the Wedding Day

Some of my favorite wedding photographs happen before anyone ever walks down the aisle.

The half-buttoned shirts. Sitting together on the edge of a bathtub. Helping each other get ready. The few quiet minutes where it feels like the rest of the day hasn't quite started yet.

The interiors of The Mount made the perfect backdrop for that slower approach. Light poured through the old windows in little pockets, creating photographs that felt moody and cinematic without needing to manufacture anything.

Some moments were photographed in color, while others immediately felt like they belonged in black and white.

Getting Ready Photos That Feel Like Part of the Story

Getting-ready photos don't have to mean matching robes and everyone standing in front of the brightest window in the room.

They can be intimate. A little messy. Romantic. Editorial.

And choosing a getting-ready location with character can completely change the way this portion of your gallery feels.

Historic homes, old hotels, estates, and spaces with interesting architecture give us so much to work with without needing to add anything else.

At The Mount, every room felt different—from deep, dramatic interiors to a light-filled bathroom covered in vintage-inspired pattern. Instead of fighting those spaces, we let each one become part of Gabrielle and Mary's story.

Wedding Inspiration at The Mount in Lenox, MA

The Mount feels distinctly New England, but there's something undeniably European about it, too. The historic architecture, gardens, terraces, and intimate interiors make it the kind of place where wedding photographs can feel both timeless and slightly unexpected.

For couples drawn to imagery that feels lived-in rather than overly posed, the estate offers endless opportunities to step away from the traditional wedding-day shot list and create something that feels more like you.

And honestly? Give me beautiful old rooms, imperfect window light, and two people in love and I'm very happy.
