There are surprise proposals, and then there are showing up to Biltmore Estate in a disguise beard and hat so your girlfriend doesn't recognize you before you get down on one knee surprise proposals.
Ian and Nicole's spring proposal at Biltmore Estate was romantic, hilarious, and required a slightly ridiculous amount of undercover planning to pull off—which made photographing it even more fun.
Nicole was visiting Biltmore during a girls trip in May, completely unaware that Ian and I had already been behind the scenes creating an elaborate game plan for how he was going to surprise her. And somehow, we actually pulled it off.
Planning the Ultimate Biltmore Estate Surprise Proposal
Before the proposal, Ian and I talked through everything. Because Nicole wasn't arriving at Biltmore with him, (she was there on a girls trip) we had to figure out exactly where the proposal would happen, where I would be waiting, how Ian would get into position without Nicole seeing him, and how we could time everything so that she walked into the surprise without suspecting a thing.
On the day of the proposal, we got into place and waited for Nicole and her friends to make their way toward the overlook. And Ian wasn't taking any chances. He showed up wearing a hat and a disguise beard so there was basically zero chance Nicole would spot him from a distance and realize what was happening. The commitment was definitely impressive!
The Moment Nicole Realized What Was Happening
Once Nicole and her friend reached the overlook, everything we'd planned finally started unfolding. With Biltmore House in the distance, Ian stepped into place and got down on one knee—and yes, the disguise beard was still very much on his face.
Nicole had absolutely no idea he was going to be there.
Those are the moments I love most about photographing surprise proposals. Before we ever think about portraits or where we're walking next, I get to document the actual story: the confusion, the realization, the reaction, the hugs, and that slightly surreal wait…we're engaged?! feeling immediately afterward.
For Ian and Nicole, it also meant documenting the payoff of a plan we'd been quietly scheming about long before she ever arrived at Biltmore.
Just-Engaged Photos at the Biltmore House
Once the secret was officially out (and Ian could finally retire the disguise), we turned the rest of their time at Biltmore into a just-engaged couples session.
We made our way toward the Biltmore House for portraits with one of North Carolina's most recognizable backdrops. The scale and architecture of the estate gives photos such an editorial feeling, while Ian and Nicole could simply enjoy the fact that they were officially engaged.
Rather than making the entire session feel overly posed, we mixed those classic portraits in front of the house with movement, candid moments, and the little interactions that naturally happen when you've just experienced something this exciting together.
The result felt like the best combination of both: photographs that show exactly where they were while still feeling completely like them.
Spring Engagement Photos in the Biltmore Gardens
From the house, we headed into the gardens for the second half of their session.
Visiting Biltmore in May meant we had all of that beautiful spring greenery surrounding us, giving this portion of their gallery a softer, more romantic feeling. I love being able to incorporate multiple environments into one session, especially somewhere like Biltmore Estate where walking a relatively short distance can completely change the look of your photographs.
The architecture around the house gave us those timeless, editorial frames, while the gardens brought in something organic, colorful, and intimate. It also gave Ian and Nicole time to slow down and actually soak everything in. They weren't just taking engagement photos—they had literally gotten engaged moments earlier.
